Book Summary
Exposition
This story takes place in Castle Redmont, The Solitary Plain and The Ruins of Gorlan. The main character, Will is a 15 year old boy who is small for his age, very agile, is an orphan (so he grew up in the ward) and is very curious. Halt is a Ranger, recently he chose will as an apprentice, he defeated Morgarath the first time, is a very experienced ranger and is very solemn. Horace is Will’s friend, at first they were enemies but then they saved each others lives, he is gifted in the art of battle but he isn’t aware of it, he was bullied at the knight school but then he got his revenge with the aid of halt and is also a ward mate. Another character is Gilan, he was Halt’s apprentice but now he is older and experienced, he is a Junior ranger so he isn’t an apprentice but hasn’t been an actual ranger for long. Will has to go through lots of training before the rising action.
Rising Action
First Will and Halt go to ranger camp, it’s held every year and it’s only for rangers and their apprentices. Just before they get there they meet up with Gilan. When they finally get to the camp not many people are there, they see other ranger packing up their tents. They learn that the Kalkara are on the attack, the kalkara are bear and wolf like monsters and assassins. The eyes of the Kalkara are like voids, if a person stares at them they will become frozen until they are dead or the Kalkara is dead. Will, Halt and Gilan then head to the Solitary Plain.
Climax
After they reach the Solitary Plain they still need to head towards the Whistling Rocks in the middle of the plain. The Whistling Rocks are called that because when the constant wind hits the rock it makes an annoying humming sound that never stops. When they get about 10 meters away the sound is so loud they can’t even hear themselves think so they leave the rocks. That evening they come across some Kalkara tracks and they set up camp. The next Day they figure out that the Kalkara are after Halt and want to ambush him at the ruins of Gorlan. They then send will with two horses back to Castle Redmont. and halt heads straight to the Ruins of Gorlan.
Problem Solved
Soon after they send Will to the castle he gets there. Will then tells Baron Arald about the Kalkaras’ return and the Baron Gets Sir Rodney and they quickly leave and head towards the Ruins of Gorlan. When they get there they can’t find Halt, there is a bonfire and sitting near it is a Kalkara, they figure that Halt killed the other one. Whilst this is happening Halt is sitting inside the Ruins when he hears a loud roar, he is able to gain his footing and when he climbs the wall he sees Baron Arald get hit by the Kalkara. Sir Rodney attempts to hit the Kalkara with his battle ax and with full power but he accidentally looks it in the eyes so he is unable to finish the strike. Will then notices the lit torch sitting near him and remembers that the Kalkaras’ weakness is fire, he then lights his arrow on fire and shoots the Kalkara, since the protective layer of oil on their fur is extremely flammable he hits it one time and it bursts into flame and dies.
Falling Action & Resolution
Finally, When Will, Halt Sir Rodney & Baron Arald return everyone is happy that the Kalkara are dead. they all spent a day resting and healing. The next day Baron Arald held a ceremony for Will, They offered him the chance to be a knight and would give him a sword and a shield. Will denied this and said that he was a ranger not a knight. When Will was walking past Halt, Halt Smiled. After that they loft to defeat the forces of Morgarath.

Book Review
The Ranger’s Apprentice
By John Flanagan
Review by Duncan Seter
I love this book, it was worth the wait. The book is called The Ranger’s Apprentice. I rate this book five stars it was really well put together, they gave you some time to think about what would happen and then they give you the answer, this story worked out very well The plot is Will ends up becoming a ranger’s apprentice and has to fight a war against Morgarath’s armies. I liked the characters in this story, they are all very well designed and they don’t bore you with tons of back story. This book also kept my interest, they gave you some action to keep you reading but it wasn’t non-stop either. The theme to this book was that you don’t need to be big to be a strong person.
The Ranger’s apprentice conveys the theme very well, they have a decent amount of action and also gave you adventure elements like traveling long distances and meeting new and strange characters. I think the only way they could actually improve it would be to add little more comedy. I think this book is memorable and interesting but they have to if they want more people to keep reading the series. I liked this book a little more than the first Michael Vey book, the other book was kind of sad but, like this book, kept you interested.
The conflict in this book is well presented, they give you a while before the rising action but it hits you like BAM. The conflict is that Will, Halt, Sir Rodney and Baron Arald must go and defeat the last to Kalkara. This book's audience is mainly kids but it’s made for them anyway.
